Materials

  • 3.5 gallons peat moss growing medium(Pro-Mix Sunshine Mix) or whatever is available
  • 3.5 gallons coco coir
  • 3.5 gallons vermiculite
  • 3.5 gallons perilite
  • 3.5 gallons organic compost
  • 3.5 gallons composted manure Combine all of the following ingredients in layers on a tarp or in a splash pool for young children. This will make mixing far easier and less messy.

Sprinkle ingredients below on top of the combined ingredients listed above.

  • 1 cup alfalfa meal
  • 1 cup banana meal
  • 1 cup dolomite lime
  • 1 cup fishbone meal
  • 1 cup kelp meal
  • 1 cup mineralised phosphate
  • ¼ cup insect frass
  • ¼ cup epsom salt (magnesium sulfate)

Instructions

  • Mix together all ingredients thoroughly while slowly adding water to moisten the freshly batched artisan soil blend. Keeping the soil lightly moistened is an important step in kickstarting the micro and macro life we are bringing in for our plants. This is also the step where things like L.A.B Serum (cultured lactobacillus) are to be added as a soil drench to get things moving. The L.A.B serum recipe will be added to the recipe section of the site as time allows.
  • After all ingredients are mixed and moistened we either move it to large containers e.g., Rubbermaid tote, clean garbage can, or even just wrapped up in the tarp the soil was mixed in. Most mixes like this need a 4-6 week period to cook, this time allows the micro herd-like bacteria, worms and fungi to get comfortable and start doing their magic.
  • After this stage we can now use this artisan blended soil, fill the bottom1/3 to 1/2 of your plants final container with this super soil. Make a 1-2 inch buffer of transplant mix between the roots of your young plant and this mix. Finish the transplant and water the plants in their new pots as you normally would.
